never before had many violent (f4 , f5) tornadoes been observed in single tornado outbreak. there 7 f5 tornadoes , 23 f4 tornadoes. outbreak began in morris, illinois, @ around 1:00 pm on april 3. storm system moved east daytime heating had made air more unstable, tornadoes grew more intense. tornado struck near monticello, indiana f4 , had path length of 121 miles (195 km), longest path length of tornado outbreak. nineteen people killed in tornado. first f5 tornado of day struck city of xenia, ohio, @ 4:40 pm edt. killed 34, injured 1,150, destroyed one-fourth of city, , caused serious damage in fourth of city.
seven f5s observed—one each in indiana, ohio , kentucky, 3 in alabama , final 1 crossed through parts of indiana, ohio , kentucky. 31 killed in brandenburg, kentucky, , 28 died in guin, alabama. 1 tornado occurred in windsor, ontario, canada, killing 9 , injuring 30 others there, of them @ former windsor curling club. during peak of outbreak, staggering sixteen tornadoes on ground simultaneously. @ 1 point forecasters in indiana, frustrated because not keep of simultaneous tornado activity, put entire state of indiana under blanket tornado warning. first , time in u.s. history entire state under tornado warning.
there 18 hours of continuous tornado activity. outbreak ended in caldwell county, north carolina, @ 7:00 am on april 4. total of 319 killed in 148 tornadoes april 3 through april 4 , 5,484 injured.
the 1974 super outbreak occurred @ end of strong, record-setting la niña event. 1973–74 la niña strong 1998–99 la niña. despite apparent connection between la niña , 2 of largest tornado outbreaks in history, no definitive linkage exists between la niña , outbreak or tornado activity in general. tornado myths soundly debunked (not first time) tornado activity during outbreak.
