during world war ii city s manufacturers once again turned efforts wartime production. ball state , muncie s airport trained pilots u.s. navy. postwar era period of expansion muncie, continued growth , development of industries, construction of new homes, schools, , businesses. population boom brought further development, 1946 1965.


since 1950s , 1960s muncie has continued education center in state , emerged regional health center. enrollment @ ball state increased, new buildings erected on college s campus. ball memorial hospital expanded facilities. however, 1960s, industrial trends had shifted. beginning in 1970s several manufacturing plants closed or moved elsewhere, while others adapted industrial changes , remained in muncie.


ball corporation, example, closed muncie glass manufacturing facilities in 1962; corporate headquarters relocated broomfield, colorado in 1998. muncie home other manufacturing operations, including warner gear (a division of borgwarner), delco remy, general motors, ontario corporation, a. e. boyce company, , westinghouse electric, among others.
