chaim koppelman born in brooklyn, new york city, sam , sadie koppelman, images appear in several of works. @ age of 9, drew profile of napoleon in geography book, , images of emperor reappear throughout long career. began study of art in works progress administration (wpa) classes @ brooklyn museum in 1936, , continued @ brooklyn college, educational alliance, , american artists school. studied sculpture william koss, abstract painting carl holty, , lithography eugene morley. @ art students league, studied sculpture jose de creeft , etching martin lewis , barnet.


in 1940s koppelman worked @ museum of non-objective painting on 54th street in manhattan (which later became guggenheim museum) with, among others, jackson pollock, robert de niro, sr., rolph scarlett, lucia autorino, , ward jackson. 2 of early, abstract pen , ink drawings in guggenheim collection. first recorded exhibition of koppelman s work held in lounge gallery of eighth street playhouse in 1942, , included drawings, paintings, , sculpture. following year, had solo exhibition @ outlines gallery in pittsburgh.
