at 650 hectares, noi bai second-largest airport in vietnam, behind 800 hectare tan son nhat international airport. terminal 1, completed in 2001, had 1 main section international flights new terminal extension (denoted lobby e) domestic flights, completed in late 2013. extension, terminal 1 capable of handling 9 million passengers per annum. following inauguration of terminal 2 in january 2015, terminal 1 solely used domestic flights. terminal being upgraded handle 15 million passengers annually upon completion in march 2018. construction of new terminal (terminal 2) next existing 1 designed capacity of 10 million passengers per annum started in march 2012. 996m long new terminal building, funded japan international cooperation agency oda loan designed japan airport consultants , built taisei corporation. total investment project ¥75.5 billion (us$645.35 million). japan s official development assistance accounted ¥59 billion ($504.27 million) of investment, while theremaining amount covered local funds. new international terminal inaugurated on 4 january 2015 new freeway connecting airport downtown hanoi via nhật tân bridge.


the airport has 3,800-meter paved runway (cat ii – 11r/29l) opened in august 2006 , older 3,200-meter paved runway (cat – 11l/29r). older runway closed upgrades 4 months august december 2014. distance between 2 runways 250 metres, airport restricts maximum passenger capacity in accordance international civil aviation organisation safety regulations.
