the fort standing in hilly area shows how north indian style of fort construction differs of south. in south of forts built on sea beds bekal fort in kerala. granite walls of fort between 16 , 20 feet thick , on south side meet city walls. south face of fort perpendicular. there 10 gates giving access fort. of these khanderao gate, datia darwaza, unnao gate, jharna gate, laxmi gate, sagar gate, orchha gate, sainyar gate , chand gate. notable sights in fort shiva temple, ganesh temple @ entrance, , kadak bijli cannon used in uprising of 1857. memorial board reminds 1 of hair-raising feat of rani lakshmibai in jumping on horseback fort. nearby rani mahal, built in later half of 19th century there archaeological museum.


the fort extends sprawling 15 acres (61,000 m) , colossal structure measures 312m in length , 225m in width. on whole, there twenty-two supports mammoth strengthening wall surrounded moat on both sides. shattered upholder on eastern side rebuilt british, added floor panch mahal.
