schulek born in pest , began school in buda. mother auguszta zsigmondy. father Ágost schulek held position in finance ministry of lajos kossuth. schulek family accompanied kossuth s government on flight debrecen during hungarian revolution of 1848, returned capital. after suppression of struggle independence, Ágost schulek declared persona non grata, , family returned debrecen.
graduating in 1857, frigyes schulek enrolled in buda polytechnic (józsef technical university), received diploma in 1861. thereafter attended academy of fine arts (akademie der bildenden künste) in vienna.
he became member of wiener bauhütte studied under friedrich von schmidt, profoundly influenced later interest in middle ages architecture.
in 1866 briefly worked on restoration of regensburg cathedral, subsequently visiting france , italy.
from 1871 taught architectural drawing @ budapest art school, where, colleague of imre steindl, helped design pest s city hall. in 1872 appointed architect of newly founded provisional monuments commission (műemlékek országos bizottság), later known national monuments commission, first such independent hungarian organization. here coordinated reconstruction , restoration of mediæval castles , churches.
