the average life expectancy in ancient rome 27 years old. deaths in women common because of dangers of childbirth , men died on battlefield. lived elderly age expected children take care of them. in second century ad, laws passed stating son should care elderly father, there no compulsory obligation. children cared elderly parents because of belief in pietras, or sense duty parents , gods. mythological example of pietras comes story of aeneas, carried elderly father out of burning city of troy following trojan war.
