in july 1918, when vacancy occurred due death of liberal mp, parliamentary seat of finsbury east. cotton obvious candidate defend seat liberal party. due wartime electoral truce, did not face official unionist party opponent , comfortably elected;
following boundary changes, evan s finsbury east seat merged unionist seat of finsbury central form new finsbury constituency. coalition government chose publicly endorse unionist candidate sitting mp old central seat. endorsement made evan s prospects difficult , after 5 months mp defeated;
