the burger king classic has been played @ 3 locations in history. erie insurance arena used house tournament in 1980s. in 1989, location moved gannon university s hammermill center. in 2016, tournament moved joann mullen gymnasium @ cathedral prep events center. classic held in mid-january on friday , saturday.


ron sertz, former cathedral prep athletic director , director of operations erie otters, founded tournament , ran first 25 years of existence. in 1983, after year athletic director @ cathedral prep, decided begin top-level tip-off classic community.


this tip-off tournament became mcdonald s classic in 1983 , brought in 3 strong teams (beaver falls of pa, bishop loughlin of brooklyn, ny, , roman catholic of philadelphia, pa). tournament considered success bishop loughlin crowned first classic champion, defeating host cathedral prep ramblers 70-63. sertz decided move tournament more prominence , began work harder , harder on bringing stronger , more recognized teams every year. during 25th anniversary of classic in 2008, sertz announced retirement classic director. replaced current cathedral prep athletic director bill flanagan.


in 2010, burger king signed multi-year sponsorship deal classic, taking event s title away rival mcdonald s, had held moniker since 1983.


event schedule

the tournament composed of 4 teams in round-robin format. classic teams arrive on thursday before tournament begins. each team assigned host cathedral prep caters them entire day, makes sure meals, , finds places wish visit. each team given rooms @ sheraton erie bay front hotel.


thursday spent time settle in each team. on friday, practices scheduled host each team attend. each practice held @ cathedral prep s gymnasium , shoot-around team. first game tips off friday night @ 7:00.


on saturday, teams may schedule shoot-around @ prep gymnasium if wish or may travel around erie. consolation match takes place @ 7:00 between 2 teams lost previous night , night highlighted classic championship @ 8:30. after championship game, presentation ceremony takes place , words said winning coach on tournament. sunday morning teams return respective schools.
