biography
early life

juan josé paso son of domingo de passo. domingo left spain , moved buenos aires in 1750. worked baker; buenos aires had scarce production of bread @ time. domingo got married maría manuela fernández escandón on march 8, 1755. domingo became vecino after marriage. son juan josé esteban paso born on january 2, 1758, , baptized 5 days later. place of paso s initial education unknown, not real colegio san carlos, not among recorded list of students.


paso studied @ university of córdoba , graduated in theology in 1779. in buenos aires, named professor of philosophy @ colegio real de san carlos (royal school of san carlos). in 1783 moved upper peru , studied law in university of chuquisaca; return buenos aires lawyer in 1803. after british invasions of río de la plata pursued political career revolutionary leader moved new national identity growing among criollos .


juntas

paso assisted cabildo abierto of may 22, 1810 , supported faction sought dismissal of viceroy baltasar hidalgo de cisneros, convincing many others fervent speech. participated in creation of first junta (primera junta) government on may 25 , named secretary of junta along mariano moreno, whom shared political points of view. sent junta montevideo (today s uruguay capital city) spread ideas of revolution.


paso part of first triumvirate , second triumvirate ruled united provinces of río de la plata (argentina) between 1811 , 1814. during period participated in asamblea del año xiii , sent chile representative. negotiations chilean patriots failed , capitaincy of chile refused take part in union.


congress of tucumán

in 1815 paso named assistant supreme director , war consultant. later elected representative congress of tucumán declared argentine independence on july 9, 1816. secretary congress, paso had honor of reading independence act. however, imprisoned , charged of treason supporting monarchist faction wanted monarchy government new nation. released along other monarchist deputies.


buenos aires legislature

elected member of buenos aires province legislature in 1822, paso later became president of body. in 1824, again elected representative national congress , supported nomination of bernardino rivadavia first president of argentina.


he retired politics in 1826 disgusted violent disagreements among provinces divided between unitarians , federalists.
