preliminary repairs completed in 2000–2001 deferred maintenance funding state of california. included dismantling locomotive. project progressed until 2007, when major fundraising campaign began. @ time, budget project estimated @ us$600,000, based on assumption existing boiler saved.


in fundraising appeal, clint eastwood described sierra no. 3 treasured old friend. eastwood had ridden locomotive in career on tv series rawhide, , later used locomotive in own movie productions pale rider , unforgiven. eastwood wrote, sierra no. 3 resides @ railtown 1897 state historic park. housed in original roundhouse still in use. these 2 assets provide rare opportunity experience history 109 years ago. funding renovation project provided california cultural , historical endowment, irving j. symons foundation, sonora area foundation, california state parks foundation, teichert foundation, dupont , many individual donors.


the rebuild included boring out cylinders , turning drive wheel tires on lathe. when work on disassembled locomotive resumed, , boiler inspected thoroughly ultrasound testing, discovered new boiler necessary. old lap seam design made retrofitting modern standards costly, , risk of boiler losing historical integrity risk railtown staff decided not take. engineering drawings , other technical assistance needed build new boiler provided strasburg rail road in lancaster county, pennsylvania. old boiler shipped used pattern chelatchie boiler works of camas, washington, fabricated new welded boiler @ cost of us$600,000. boiler shipped historic southern pacific shops in sacramento, california , fitted on original frame. locomotive trucked jamestown, california final assembly. old boiler on display @ railtown 1897.


the current configuration of locomotive represents appearance during year 1929, when movie virginian filmed , provided first known evidence of presence of 3-spot s steel cab. final cost of rebuild us$1.6 million, , locomotive officially returned service on july 3, 2010.
