the 9-volt motor
1991 saw again major overhaul in train line. tracks gained new appearance power being transmitted directly through metal strips on 2 running rails. new line abandoned 12-volt power in favor of 9-volt system make compatible battery-operated elements found in lego light & sound line of sets. remote-controlled accessories 12-volt system abandoned, manual point control available , no signaling capabilities. @ same time, 9-volt train motor made train-specific fixed wheels, while sized 9-volt universal motor changed individual metal axles wheel holes axle holes technic axles, there no train wheels available.
previous 12-volt locomotives not compatible new system without modification, due change in voltage , means of powering motor, although possible retrofit them 9-volt motors. gauge did not change, therefore older rolling stock still used.
the continuing availability of train system thrown doubt in 2006, release of first remote control train sets, used battery-powered motors , did not have metal conducting strips in tracks. year, both systems available, 9-volt system being marketed under hobby train brand, available direct lego. end of 2007, 9-volt system had been discontinued.
