operation hartmut engaged every submarine in germany s navy - notably, both antiquated type ia submarines , 6 of germany s iia coastal submarines, operating training boats in baltic. boats unavailable action @ beginning of operation took part in ferrying supplies or patrolling later on.
when hartmut issued on 6 april 1940 german plan designated u-bootwaffe 8 groups (along further group seven, cancelled).

patrol area: narvik, harstad, westfjord, vagsfjord
u-25 - 1 of 2 type ia submarines in kriegsmarine. under command of viktor schütze, u-25 had no success during hartmut.
u-46 - type viib under herbert sohler iwo erich topp. u-46 had no success during hartmut.
u-51 - type viib under dietrich knorr, failed sink vessels during hartmut.
u-64 - type ixb under georg-wilhelm schulz. u-64 first u-boat sunk aircraft in war. while anchored near bjerkvik, british forces including fairey swordfish launched hms warspite sank boat on 13 april. schulz , other surviving crew rescued water german troops in norway.
u-65 - type ixb, patrolled in north sea 36 days without sinking ships.

patrol area: trondheim, namsos, romsdalsfjord
u-30 - type viia under fritz-julius lemp, responsible sinking ss athenia, first ship sunk during war. patrol along coast of norway during hartmut uneventful.
u-34 - type viia, torpedoed scuttled norwegian minelayer hnoms frøya on 13 april.

patrol area: bergen, aalesund, shetland islands
u-9 - type iib commanded wolfgang lüth. while u-9 had relatively successful career, sank no ships during hartmut.
u-15 - type iib commanded herbert wohlfarth, failed sink ships during hartmut.
u-56 - type iic uneventful patrol.
u-60 - type iic uneventful patrol.
u-62 - type iic uneventful patrol.

patrol area: stavanger
u-1 - type iia brought frontline service. submarine sunk mines, on 6 april.
u-4 - type iia brought frontline status before returning role training boat. sank british t-class submarine hms thistle.
u-boat group five
patrol area: east of shetland islands, vagsfjord, trondheim
u-37 - type ixa, 1 of few boats survive scuttled near war s end. during hartmut, k.kapt. werner hartmann sank 3 freighters.
u-38 - type ixa under heinrich liebe. u-38 engaged multiple ships, plagued premature torpedo detonations , misses.
u-47 - type viib under günther prien , iwo hans-werner kraus.
u-48 - type viib under herbert schultze , iwo reinhard suhren - both ended war successful u-boat aces, had no success on patrol.
u-49 - type viib under kurt von gossler sunk on 15 april depth charges british destroyers hms fearless , hms brazen 1 dead , 41 survivors.
u-50 - type viib sunk mines on 6 april en route patrol area.

patrol area: pentland, orkney islands, shetland islands
u-13 - type iib commanded max-martin schulte. sank 2 ships , damaged during operational time period. during patrol, u-13 docked in occupied bergen short time on 19 21 april.
u-57 - type iic under claus korth. u-57 sank british tanker in late march, had no success during weserübung.
u-58 - type iic under herbert kuppisch had 1 long patrol during entire operation, no ships sunk.
u-59 - type iic commanded harald jürst, sank 1 norwegian vessel on 6 april.
u-boat group seven
never assembled. group 7 designated patrol eastern entrance english channel, cancelled.

patrol area: lindesnes, egernsund
u-2 - type iia brought frontline status 2 patrols during operation before returning role training boat.
u-3 - type iia brought frontline service operation.
u-5 - type iia brought frontline service 1 patrol.
u-6 - type iia brought frontline service 1 patrol.
u-boat group nine
patrol area: bergen, shetland islands; sw of norwegian coast.
u-7 - type iib, on patrol west of norwegian coast when dönitz first received orders prepare hartmut. u-7 conducted 3 patrols during march/april 1940.
u-10 - type iib sank norwegian vessel in february, nothing on patrol during hartmut.
u-19 - type iib sank 4 danish merchants on 19 , 20 march.

these u-boats began patrols during timeframe of operation weserübung, not fit service (either due damage, command changes or other reasons) during beginning of hartmut. these submarines operated in area of orkney islands, shetland islands, , near bergen.
u-17 - type iib frontline training; until late april u-17 not on war patrol.
u-23 - otto kretschmer s former type iib. submarine had no success during hartmut.
u-24 - type iib began operations in late april without success.
