with money earned working amy grant , shania twain, bought house in green hills, tennessee , in built home recording studio. in 1998, led release of self-titled solo album distributed not lame recordings. co-produced millard powers , jeff balding. doug morris of universal music group picked , proposed album rerecorded, owsley insisted needed remixed either tom lord-alge, bob clearmountain or andy wallace. tom lord-alge signed on, j.r. mcneely. eponymous album owsley got re-released on march 23, 1999 under giant records.
many of songs on album anniston, alabama, born , lived until 21, , longing town. first single off album being coming roses , owsley sent entire staff of giant red rose , valentine s day card, expressing hopes things coming roses all. single didn t catch on, m alright later did score minor hit. recorded entirely on vintage studer a-80 (2-inch, 16-track of 1 defective) tape machine in home studio on hobbs road in nashville, tennessee, garnered him grammy award nomination best engineered album. album labeled 1 of best pop records of 1990s. during ensuing tour, among others joined pat mcgee band , fountains of wayne, bassist adam schlesinger owsley has recorded in later years.
