the letters i, o , z not used , there no leading zeroes, in case of peninsular malaysian number plates. current algorithm majority of sarawak s divisions start constant q prefix, followed division prefix , number sequence. example qa 1 of kuching division, issued in 2004. once qa 9999 reached, alphabetical sequence added right of division prefix; qaa 1 result. when qay 9999 achieved in late 2011, second alphabetical sequence incorporated , served suffix; result qaa 1 a. when qaa 9999 y met in near future, second alphabetical sequence reset , first alphabetical sequence advance; qab 1 outcome.
since 2011, several more divisions have exhausted respective qdx #### formats. in july 2013, sibu , mukah divisions began issuing qs #### x plates after qsy 9999 reached. followed miri division, began using qm #### x format since 20 august 2015, after qmy 9999 reached. since 19 may 2016, deputy minister of transport introduced v kuala lumpur, there possibility kuching, sibu , miri divisions current algorithm number plates may supplemented introducing previously-unused letters ensure suffix-less registrations become norm.

before formation of federation of malaysia in 1963, sarawak s vehicle number plates distinguished ndx (n = number, d = division, x = alphabet) prefixes represented 5 administrative divisions in sarawak, followed number sequence ranged 1 9999; example 1dx #### 1st division, present-day kuching division.
during 1970s, sarikei division , kapit division formed , split 3rd division become 6th , 7th divisions, , therefore assigned 6d , 7d prefixes respectively. 1980s, original 1d , 5d prefixes had been gradually exhausted passing of time , replaced single-lettered prefixes similar of peninsular malaysia. 6d , 7d prefixes continued used 1991.
however, sarawakian number plates prefixes conflicted of several states in peninsular malaysia, brunei , singapore. example, k prefix kuching division in sarawak conflicted k prefix kedah in peninsular malaysia , kuala belait in brunei. in response, malaysian road transport department amended vehicle registration plate regulations in 1988 introducing constant suffix q sarawakian number plates; example kx #### q kuching division.
post-1991
in 1991, new format adopted in suffix q moved front of sequence in sarawakian number plates. result qk 1 extended qky 9999. when change took place, sg prefix sarawakian government vehicles had been exhausted , x later placed in front of q suffix, resulting in format read sg #### xq. kuching division registration plates numerous in sarawak , kt #### q series issued halfway when new qk prefix enforced. qa prefix later replaced qk prefix kuching division.
