mentioned first time in 1203, became important trading place along goldener steig (golden path), salt-trading route between bavaria , bohemia in late middle ages. in 13th century bishop of passau gave waldkirchen title of markt (market). after several raids bohemian soldiers during 15th century city built ringmauer , big stonewall, surround it, still seen in many places of city.


belonging bishop of passau s territory more 600 years, city became part of kingdom of bavaria in 1806 , in 1871 of german empire.


waldkirchen burned down 6 times between 1492 , 1945. last fire on april 26, 1945, when 16th company of regiment grossdeutschland, ss panzer grenadier division das reich arrived st. pölten, austria. each squad of ten men armed 1 light machine gun, 1 machine pistol, 2 panzerfaust , rifles. 8 civilians killed in combat 11th armored division, , 48 houses , city s historical church destroyed. in course of action 120 families lost shelter. devastated city rebuilt during 1950s , chartered in 1972.
