by 1871 population of barry on 100, 21 buildings, new estate-owning romilly family being involved in buildup of village remained largely agricultural community. grew when developed coal port in 1880s. coal trade growing faster facilities @ tiger bay in cardiff ever , group of colliery owners formed barry railway company , chose build docks @ barry. work commenced in 1884 , first dock basin opened in 1889 followed 2 other docks , extensive port installations. barry railway brought coal down south wales valleys new docks trade grew 1 million tons in first year, on 9 million tons 1903. port crowded ships , had flourishing ship repair yards, cold stores, flour mills , ice factory. 1913, barry largest coal exporting port in world.

behind docks rose terraced houses of barry which, cadoxton, formed sizeable town. railways had played major part in development of dock helped make barry island popular resort. barry memorial hall on gladstone road inaugurated in november 1932, , obtained name honour locals lost lives in world war i.


during industrial peak number of ships sank off barry coast.
