The Knights Hospitaller Torphichen Preceptory

william wallace held last parliament here, prior battle of falkirk in 1298. surviving document signed wallace guardian of scotland, custos regni scotiae, prepared here. after battle, edward longshanks (edward of england) brought preceptory treatment of injuries caused when horse stood on him, whilst encamped @ polmont before battle. hospitallers fought on english side during wars of scottish independence, , withdrew after scots victory @ bannockburn, returning during rule of robert bruce.


the preceptor, sir william knollys, served lord high treasurer of scotland james iii , james iv, created lord st. john of torphichen, , commonly held have died @ battle of flodden in 1513.


the last preceptor, sir james sandilands, second son of james sandilands, baron of calder. sir james s father , elder brother john had both backed lords of congregation , friends of john knox. in february 1564 sir james surrendered preceptory lands crown, i.e. relative, mary, queen of scots, whereupon gave lands him payment of 10, 000 crowns, secular title lord torphichen.


the honorary post of preceptor of torphichen continues used within modern day order of st john of jerusalem.
