czugaj confirmed rush s account of events being true. czugaj testified , rush had never met lawrence or stephens, both since convicted , of new south wales, until arrested @ ngurah rai airport. rush told court chan told him:

say, don t mess around me. ve got gun me , kill you. if wanted to, kill right now.

chan protested innocence, saying before court, lot of lies have been set against me, true reality m not people put me out be. ve never threatened in life. during court proceedings, rush refused handle strapping material admitted evidence, saying no, no , before agreeing handle evidence after being urged judge.

on 13 february 2006 rush sentenced life imprisonment denpasar district court. family friend neil urquhart quoted in response life sentence imposed on rush:

know s guilty of it, know in australia, sentencing totally different. right, s in different country , suppose rights, should obey laws of country , ve got accept say. s bit harsh.

on appeal on 6 september 2006, bali high court imposed death penalty in many considered surprising outcome rush.

on 10 may 2011, judicial review of rush s sentence via appeal indonesian supreme court resulted in reduction of sentence life imprisonment. since has continued serve sentence in indonesian prison.
