the present-day civil parish of atworth created in 1884 4 former parishes or tithings.


atworth

atworth, including atworth village , hamlets of purlpit , west hill, tithing in northeast of large ancient parish of bradford on avon. land forms northern half of modern parish, roman road silchester bath northern boundary.


a roman villa (excavated in 1937 , 1971) short distance northwest of present village of atworth. poplar farmhouse 15th century , manor farmhouse 18th century.


great chalfield

great chalfield (or east chalfield), south of atworth, separate parish until 1884. great chalfield manor built in 15th century.


little chalfield

little chalfield (or west chalfield) separate manor and, in 14th , 15th centuries, separate parish. there church or chapel, recorded in conveyances 1701, lost without trace. little chalfield became extra-parochial area until civil parish of little chalfield cottles created in 1857. little chalfield manor 19th century.


cottles

cottles (or atworth cottles) part of ancient parish of bradford, became extra-parochial until 1857. there no present-day settlement name continues in cottles wood , cottles house, 16th-century building occupied since 1939 stonar school.
