after world war ii, brentano 1 of founders of christian democratic union in hesse , became member of landtag of hesse in 1946, 1947 chairman of parliamentary group.


he attended proceedings of parlamentarischer rat assembly drafting basic law federal republic of germany. in federal elections of 1949, obtained seat in west german bundestag parliament directly winning mandate of bergstraße constituency. in 1952 , other cdu mps advocated implementation of plurality voting system instead of personalized proportional representation concept, though no avail. in federal parliament, served head of cdu/csu faction 1949 1955 , again 1961 until death.


a member of european movement germany, european common assembly , parliamentary assembly of council of europe, brentano important figure in foundation of european economic community (eec).


after allied occupation statute had been lifted in 1955, appointed foreign minister of germany @ suggestion of chancellor konrad adenauer, prior had filled office himself. brentano resigned when adenauer had form coalition government free democratic party (fdp) after federal election of 1961 , had accept appointment of fdp state secretary in foreign office. succeeded party fellow gerhard schröder.
