History Hillsborough, New Brunswick



originally established around 1700 blanchard s village acadian farmers, lived here sixty years, building dykes still in use. before great expulsion of acadians in 1755, area 100% french. now, few acadians live there, though there several acadian settlements on opposite bank of petitcodiac river, such pre d en haut, new brunswick.


on september 4, 1755, battle of petitcodiac fought near hillsborough. after capture of fort beausejour during 7 years war, in attempt gain control on region, british sent punitive expedition consisting of 2 companies of british colonial troops petitcodiac river valley destroy acadian settlements located there. while main body finished operation on eastern bank, detachment dispatched western bank. when detachment under major joseph frye approached blanchard s village, located near hillsborough stands, encountered french forces under command of captain charles deschamps de boishébert , driven off heavy losses. site marked national historic sites , monument plaque.


in 1766, group of settlers arrived in area led matthias somers, michael lutz, jacob trietz (trites), charles jones, , heinrich stieff (steeves). heinrich steeves had 7 sons , name steeves still common among residents.
