in 1923, private non-profit organization, thomas jefferson foundation, purchased house jefferson levy funds raised theodore fred kuper , others. managed additional restoration under architects including fiske kimball , milton l. grigg. since time, other restoration has been performed @ monticello.
the foundation operates monticello , grounds house museum , educational institution. visitors can wander grounds, tour rooms in cellar , ground floor. more expensive tour pass options include sunset hours, tours of second floor , third floor including iconic dome.
monticello national historic landmark. private home in united states designated unesco world heritage site. included in designation original grounds , buildings of jefferson s university of virginia. 1989 1992, team of architects historic american buildings survey (habs) of united states created collection of measured drawings of monticello. these drawings held library of congress.
among jefferson s other designs poplar forest, private retreat near lynchburg (which intended daughter maria, died @ age 25); university of virginia, , virginia state capitol in richmond.
