westminster abbey
a lost monument erected mrs. bovey in westminster abbey, friend mrs. pope, shortly after death , survived late 1750. ballard called beautiful honorary marble monument , wrote friend asking him copy inscription him, telling him on north side. transcribed in ballard s ladies , in john wilford s memorials. there no mention of monument or of mrs. boevey either in mackenzie walcott s memorials of westminster, (1851), or in arthur penrhyn stanley s westminster abbey, (1882, 5th edition). text transcribed ralph bigland in historical, monumental, , genealogical collections relative county of gloucester (1786–1794):
memory of mrs. catharina bovey, person , understanding have become highest rank in female life, vivacity have recommended in best conversation; judgement, inclination, chose such retirement gave great opportunities in reading , reflection, made use of wisest purposes of improvement in knowledge , religion. upon other subjects ventured far out of common way of thinking; in religious
matters made holy scriptures, in skilled, rule , guide of faith , actions, esteeming more fate rely upon plain word of god, run freedoms of thought upon revealed truths, great share of time allowed closet not perceived in economy; had ordered , instructed family, happy influence, of temper , conduct, of uniform , exemplary christian life. pleased god bless considerable estate, which, liberal hand, guided wisdom , piety, employed glory, , of neighbours. domestic expenses managed decency , dignity suitable fortune; frugality made income abound proper objects of charity, relief of necessitous, , encouragement of industrious, , instruction of ignorant. distributed not cheerfulness, joy, which, upon occasions of raising , refreshing spirit of afflicted, not refrain breaking forth tears, flowing heart thoroughly affected compassion , benevolence. did many of works, while lived, go memorial before god; , left follow her. died jan. 21, 1726, in 57th year of age @ flaxley, seat in gloucestershire, , buried there, name long remembered, , several of benefactions @ place, others, particularly recorded. monument erected, utmost respect memory, , justice character, executrix mrs. mary pope, lived near 40 years in perfect friendship, never once interrupted till lamented death

in vault near chapel reposited body of mrs catharina bovey, daughter of john riches, esq. of london, merchant. married william bovey, esq. lord of mannor of flaxley, @ age of 15, left widow, without children, @ age of 22, , continued rest of life. entertained friends , neighbours agreeable hospitality; took care have large reserve charity, bestowed, not on such occasions offered, studied how employ make useful , advantageous. disposition known in district her, became acquainted circumstances of wanted; and, preserved many families ruin, seasonable loans or gifts, conveyed assistance of better rank, in such manner made doubly acceptable. how far bounty extended known herself alone; of appeared, honour , god`s glory, in frequent distributions poor, , charity schools round country, in relieving in prison, , delivering many out of it, in contributing churches of english establishment abroad, aiding several @ home, in cloathing , feeding indigent neighbours, , teaching children, of whom every sunday, turns, entertained @ house, , condescended examine them herself; besides continual, might said daily, course of liberality during life. bequeathed @ death, towards founding college in island of bermudas £500; grey coat hospital, in st. margaret`s, westminster, £500; blue coat hospital in westminster, £500; charity school of christ church, parish of southwark, £400; augment living of place, £1200; put out poor children apprentices, interest of £400 ever; of summe £160 had been left mr. clarke , mr. bovey; distributed, executrix should think fit, among whom had put out apprentices in life-time £400; lastly, designed re-building of chapel, pious design of hers speedily
