this massive stone breakwater extends foot of priory 900 yards (810 metres) out sea, protecting northern flank of mouth of tyne. has broad walkway on top, popular sunday strollers. on lee side lower level rail track, formerly used trains , cranes during construction , maintenance of pier. @ seaward end lighthouse.


the pier s construction took on 40 years (1854–1895). in 1898 original curved design proved inadequate against great storm , centre section destroyed. pier rebuilt in straighter line , completed in 1909. companion pier @ south shields protects southern flank of river mouth.


a lighthouse built on north pier in 1864, when pier had rebuilt new design new lighthouse required. work undertaken trinity house, beginning in 1903; lighthouse finished before pier itself, , first lit on 15 january 1908. remains in use today.


before pier built, lighthouse stood within grounds of tynemouth priory , castle. demolished in 1898-99. stood on site of now-disused coastguard station.
