the men s team formed in 1916, , played 1916–17 season under first head coach john garrity , went 3–3. university joined lone star conference in 1931 , since time team has won grand total of 22 conference titles 1 national title. team has been national playoffs numerous times since joining ncaa have not made past elite 8 in national tournament. team coached sam walker has coached team since 2000 , has combined record of 249–180, , 103–93 in conference games, has more wins other basketball coach in program s history. team featured opponent of texas western university s (now university of texas @ el paso) historic color barrier breaking team in walt disney film glory road during 1966 season. game shown being played in commerce arena shot in had close resemblance university fieldhouse, lions play day. team saw lot of success under head coach bob rodgers, has highest winning percentage in program s history day .769, led them playoffs in 3 out of 5 seasons , in 1954–55 season led team national championship defeated southeastern oklahoma score of 71–54 first (and only) national title in addition led team 4 conference titles. program had lots of success throughout 1970s under head coach jim grudger led team 3 conference titles , took team national tournament 4 times , came close winning national title in 1978 when took team naia semi-finals , defeated quincy score of 87–73.
