Bob Rae Liberal Party of Canada leadership election, 2006



bob rae, 58, ontario new democratic party premier of ontario 1990 1995 , federal ndp mp broadview—greenwood in house of commons 1978 1982. since leaving electoral politics, rae worked on number of contentious issues federal government, notably air india disaster; worked in international relations advising on constitutional issues , conducted study ontario government on post-secondary education. rae joined liberal party in april 2006 (he had been liberal in 1960s) before launching centrist campaign month. in speech canadian club of winnipeg on march 13, 2006, rae expressed interest in uniting progressive forces of canada in order regain majority government in canadian house of commons. there s progressive record s shared majority of canadians, far, have not succeeded in becoming majority in house of commons, must think bit how can happen.

high profile supporters

rae supported former senior chrétien aides, such older brother john rae , eddie goldenberg, plus senior ontario provincial liberals such provincial finance minister greg sorbara , provincial health minister , deputy premier george smitherman. on may 12, rae endorsed longtime trudeau cabinet stalwart allan maceachen. former leadership contenders maurizio bevilacqua, carolyn bennett , hedy fry withdrew campaign throw support rae, bevilacqua becoming national co-chair campaign , chief advisor on economic policy. susan kadis, former toronto co-chair of ignatieff s campaign, endorsed rae on october 27. former finance minister ralph goodale endorsed rae on november 28.


at convention, rae received endorsements defeated candidates prior third ballot: scott brison , joe volpe withdrew after first ballot support him, did ken dryden after being knocked off on second ballot. however, rae knocked off third ballot, , encouraged delegates choose candidate best suits personal beliefs. never disclosed voted on fourth ballot.
