ron sertz, former cathedral prep athletic director , director of operations erie otters, founded tournament , ran first 25 years of existence. in 1983, after year athletic director @ cathedral prep, decided begin top-level tip-off classic community.
this tip-off tournament became mcdonald s classic in 1983 , brought in 3 strong teams (beaver falls of pa, bishop loughlin of brooklyn, ny, , roman catholic of philadelphia, pa). tournament considered success bishop loughlin crowned first classic champion, defeating host cathedral prep ramblers 70-63. sertz decided move tournament more prominence , began work harder , harder on bringing stronger , more recognized teams every year. during 25th anniversary of classic in 2008, sertz announced retirement classic director. replaced current cathedral prep athletic director bill flanagan.
in 2010, burger king signed multi-year sponsorship deal classic, taking event s title away rival mcdonald s, had held moniker since 1983.
