Formation Serbian Volunteer Corps (World War II)

on 15 september 1941, nedić proposed government should dismissed , allow neighbouring states police it, minister mihailo olćan proposed puppet government should call upon serbian population form anti-communist units.


the next day 234 members of yugoslav national movement (zbor), ljotić s , olćan s pre-war political party enlisted first volunteers. on 17 september serbian volunteer command formed under command of colonel konstantin mušicki, serbian officer. command consisted of 12 companies, each 120-150 men strong. many volunteers came student zbor organization , others refugees ndh. men wore olive green uniforms or, in case of officers, uniform of former yugoslav armed forces, cross of st. george on right breast. ranks or grade designations practical purposes of former royal yugoslav army. weapons mixed; besides german arms supplied, foreign rifles , machine guns, seized war booty defeated yugoslav forces used. mortars , light artillery on hand in varying quantities. command had educational department task educate fighters ideologically. head of educational section journalist ratko parežanin. had intelligence section had centres on serbia. spiritual needs of corps maintained protojerej aleksa todorović. corps operated in close alliance russian corps.


serbian volunteer corps formally under nedić s command of gendarmerie, was, sds , sgs, under direct control of ss , police leader august meyszner , commanding general in serbia. in operations in field, units put under tactical command of german divisions. ljotić himself had no control on sdk. sdk units not allowed move assigned territory without german authorization.
