the legislative branch of cambodian government made of bicameral parliament.



the national assembly (radhsaphea) has 123 members, elected five-year term proportional representation.
the senate (protsaphea) has 61 members. 2 of these members appointed king, 2 elected lower house of government, , remaining fifty-seven elected popularly functional constituencies. members in house serve six-year term.

the official duty of parliament legislate , make laws. bills passed parliament given king gives proposed bills royal assent. king not have veto power on bills passed national assembly , thus, cannot withhold royal assent. national assembly has power dismiss prime minister , government two-thirds vote of no confidence.


senate

the upper house of cambodian legislature called senate. consists of sixty-one members. 2 of these members appointed king, 2 elected lower house of government, , remaining fifty-seven elected popularly electors provincial , local governments, in similar fashion senate of france. members in house serve six-year terms.


prior 2006, elections had last been held senate in 1999. new elections supposed have occurred in 2004, these elections postponed. on january 22, 2006, 11,352 possible voters went poll , chose candidates. election criticized local monitoring non-governmental organizations being undemocratic.


as of 2006, cambodian people s party holds forty-three seats in senate, constituting significant majority. 2 other major parties holding seats in senate funcinpec party (holding twelve seats) , sam rainsy party (holding 2 seats).


national assembly

the lower house of legislature called national assembly. made of 123 members, elected popular vote serve five-year term. elections last held national assembly in july 2013.


in order vote in legislative elections, 1 must @ least eighteen years of age. however, in order elected legislature, 1 must @ least twenty-five years of age.


the national assembly led president , 2 vice presidents selected assembly members prior each session.


as of 2013, cambodian people s party holds majority of seats in national assembly, controlling 68 out of 123 seats. cambodia national rescue party holds remaining 55 seats.
